I looked at my account in uedit and my security level was 0, so it set it to 99 and was able to log in briefly before running out of time.
I also created a second regular user account with the same results. The security level gets set to 0 and the password is blank.
I used "jsexec makeguest" to create a guest account. I can log in as guest and browse around the BBS but the sysop and regular user accounts are not usable.
I'm not sure why that is but that is what I discovered so far.

I have just setup a new Synchronet BBS and make an initial setup.
I logged on for the first time and was going through the new user questions/setup. Shortly after logging in I saw message something like times up and I was logged off. I never got to the create guest account setup question.
Now when I login and enter my name and it says "Times up.", and logs me out. It doesn't ask for my password. I see this on the sbbs terminal server screen..

How did you create the second regular user account? The normal methods (e.g. logging in as "new") will create a new user account with the values you have configured in SCFG->System->New User Values. Check those values.

Maybe the user account is expiring? The log would normally indicate
that. If New User Values->Expiration Days is set to 0, then a new user account should not expire ever. Do you have this set to a non-zero
value?

The time per day is set to default, 240 minites if I remember right.
The security levels drop to 0 and the password field blanks after attempting to login for some reason I don't know.

It contains user.tab.orig as sbbs saves it, and user.tab.uedit as uedit saves it after I have added level 99, 500 minutes, all
the
exemptions and the password.
I am using "exec/uedit" from the /sbbs directory.

did you say that in the beginning and i didnt catch that?
you should reset all your permissions and take ownership.
I installed a fresh v3.20a on a new Linux system and did not encounter this issue:
Maybe try deleting your data/user/* files and logging on as new again and immediately save a copy of the created user.tab file (as soon as its created during the new user process) and share that with me.

I am not sure why but after deleting data/user/* and creating a new account things are working normally. Maybe I didn't have enough of the initial setup done when I first logged in.
The new user.tab looks a fair bit different, it is here if you'd like to look.

I haven't run 'upgrade_to_v320' but I did run 'jsexec update'. That was some hours (maybe 6-24) after the install and initial setup. The update ran successfully but didn't report doing anything.
I had a very light initial setup done, my name and BBS name but not much else. I didn't have my message options or BBSID set at the time when I first logged in.
If you hadn't yet created any users, that might just be the key-clue I needed.

No, just my own sysop account and guest.
I had a very light initial setup done, my name and BBS name but not
much else. I didn't have my message options or BBSID set at the
time when I first logged in.
Cool, with that info, I'll see if I can reproduce the symptom.
I have changed some of my default login options and am now getting the "Times up." message again.
1. I changed my editor to Syledit.
2. I disabled the spinning pause prompt.
3. I changed the default mail scan to search for new personal messages instead of a new mail scan.
4. I changed the default transfer protocol. I hit "q" at that prompt so there is no default protocol. I do that so I can choose
zmodem when I am remote and local copy when I am local.
I think one of those changes may have caused the issue.

I was logged in with telnet using plain old telnet, "telnet localhost". That's the way I access the BBS if I am local.
