I know nothing more about that what I read on the home page but may be
of interest to someone. :)

I had Puppy ("Wary" variant) on my "new" laptop (1GHz with 320mb-----
RAM so nothing much by current standards) for several years, tho
the laptop really only got used when I dragged it to the linux
user grope.
Puppy is small, well-mannered, and runs like the wind on old
hardware. It doesn't crash or muck up anything else. OTOH
wireless networking was an Adventure (worked once, then never
again), and I never got sound to work. Nonetheless, it is one of
only two linux distros I'd liked well enough to keep longer than overnight. (The other was Mandrake 7.2) Tho Puppy's desktop
reminds me hilariously of Windows 3.1 !!

Thanks for the review! I do plan to switch to Linux, probably Ubuntu as
I am currently running Mythbuntu for the recording of TV shows. Puppy
Linux might be something good for the older computers. Most of rooms
here have Ethernet, so wireless wouldn't be needed.

3 years ago. For some reason on NNTP I can't start a new thread,
but I can reply to old threads. So I picked yours as suitably
neglected. <g>

THAT's the problem -- Linux is directionally-challenged!!

See my current Linux Adventure in the thread entitled
"Linux-Go-Round" :(
I doubt it will ever be my everyday OS; the linux desktops are
just too unreliable as Mint just managed to demonstrate (I'd have
kept it around otherwise). What's workable in a server ain't
necessarily so in a desktop.

At the present rate, I never will. :/

So, how do I get the durn thing to actually see the network? I'm no
good with Windows networking either so I'm no worse off on Mint there.
Anyway, right now it looks like this (because I could not figure out
where to set static IP in Mint so gave up on getting the gigabit switch
to work for now, but I had an extra 10/100 router, or several).
router-modem plugged into DSL
XP plugged into router-modem
router #2 plugged into router-modem
Mint plugged into router #2
Win7 plugged into router #2
They are all set to share all their body parts.
ALL of them can see the internet just fine. The two routers see each
other fine, but can't see what is plugged into the other router (that
is, doesn't show up in their device lists).
Win7 can see Mint and I can mostly have my way with all Mint's files
from the Win7 box, tho permissions are still somewhat adventurous. (The complaint, er, login box that came up did not specify which password to use, so when the Win7 pwd didn't work, I tried Mint's login pwd, and
that worked. Win7 is set to not need a password.)
Mint can see that the Win7 box exists, but that's it. When I ask "Files" to look at Win7, eventually it comes back with "unable to mount
location, Failed to retrieve share list from server, connection timed out".
The XP machine can see itself as shared and networked but can't see
either of the other two. Neither Win7 nor Mint can see XP.
They all think the network is named "workgroup".
What am I doing worng??

Right: they're the same
but different.
Here I have some computers able to dual boot: I record and playback TV shows using Mythbuntu, which is Ubuntu running MythTV less options like OpenOffice (which could be added). Some of the computers had Windows on them and at the time was easier to use Windows. Not sure if its the distance or the TVs (multiple) but always seems the TV makes a lousy monitor for text.

I have never (but meant to) plugged my computer into a TV. As it
happens my computer is close to a 48" TV that I can plug into
with HDMI. I'm going to try that soon and see how unreal
tournament and/or quake look.
If you don't hear from me for a while.. :)

Hello Ky,there.

I'm not sure anymore. The only windows box here belongs to my room mate. I don't know what she has going on there and I don't think she does either soI
don't ask.. :)
If I need to get or send her files I use a usb stick!
KM> What am I doing worng??
I'm not sure. Is the network actually called workgroup? I recall chages between xp and win7/8 but have no way to look at it now.
Not if I can help it but I have seen that too and do everything in my power not to see it again, since it's a dark hole that is nearly imposible to get out of without a reformat.

might as well be hung... I found something called Easy2Boot which lets
I have been writing iso's to usb sticks with dd and just booting from usb. I use a command something like ..
dd bs=4M if=somefile.iso of=/dev/sd?
Easy2Boot looks interesting though, I'll have to give that a try.
