I had Puppy ("Wary" variant) on my "new" laptop (1GHz with 320mb RAM so nothing much by current standards) for several years, tho the laptop
really only got used when I dragged it to the linux user grope.

Puppy is small, well-mannered, and runs like the wind on old hardware.
It doesn't crash or muck up anything else. OTOH wireless networking was
an Adventure (worked once, then never again), and I never got sound to
work. Nonetheless, it is one of only two linux distros I'd liked well
enough to keep longer than overnight. (The other was Mandrake 7.2) Tho
Puppy's desktop reminds me hilariously of Windows 3.1 !!

Thanks for the review! I do plan to switch to Linux, probably Ubuntu as
I am currently running Mythbuntu for the recording of TV shows. Puppy
Linux might be something good for the older computers. Most of rooms

And sometimes time. Not recalling the details but for some reason in
one of the Mythbuntu Frontends (Mythbuntu records TV shows on the
Backend, playback is done using the Frontend) I had a heck of a time
getting the correct time to display: maybe at installation the BIOS
clock wasn't set correctly as I had to fiddle to get the system to
display the correct time -- only problem was with the hours; minutes was correct. <shrug> LIS, been years.

Hopefully they (Linux people) are correcting that. Not sure what the
layout would be called here. The Windows system (to be switched to
Linux some year) does grab some data from the NSA320 Media Server; and I
think that runs internally using Linux but externally Windows (or
Apple), as does the Western Digital MyBook (know that uses Linux
    internally).

Win7 can see Mint and I can mostly have my way with all Mint's files

use, so when the Win7 pwd didn't work, I tried Mint's login pwd, and
that worked. Win7 is set to not need a password.)

Mint can see that the Win7 box exists, but that's it. When I ask "Files"

Here I have some computers able to dual boot: I record and playback TV
shows using Mythbuntu, which is Ubuntu running MythTV less options like OpenOffice (which could be added). Some of the computers had Windows on
them and at the time was easier to use Windows. Not sure if its the
distance or the TVs (multiple) but always seems the TV makes a lousy
    monitor for text.

I've heard nice things about Parallels tho since Mac desktop gives me
    hives, I haven't used it.

However I'm working with someone on a big webware dev project, and in
the course of that got introduced to Plesk (same ownership) -- and it's
really nice. Well-organized, and me who knows nothing about webserver management could dive right in and actually do things with the
webserver, as for the most part what to do is no-brainer obvious just by
    how stuff is organized.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plesk

I use it with WinSCP (for root login since Plesk does user-level login
only) so I can watch what Plesk does in realtime -- nice combination for learning what the heck you just actually did. :)

So, how do I get the durn thing to actually see the network? I'm no

I'm not sure anymore. The only windows box here belongs to my room mate. I don't know what she has going on there and I don't think she does either so I don't ask.. :)

If I need to get or send her files I use a usb stick!

to work for now, but I had an extra 10/100 router, or several).

I just have a dynamic ip so I just get an ip from dhcp when I boot. I have never looked into a static ip although maybe I should do that. I also need to look into ipv6. I'm not sure when that is going to be required but some folks have it up and running already.

What is it about the Mac that you like?

The thing I like about linux is the choices you get. Get tired of looking at kde, run gnome. Get tired of gnome run xfce. I have never gotten tired of xfce yet.. :)

    Hello Barry,

    Right: they're the same

    They both boot your computer.

    but different.

    Totaly!

Here I have some computers able to dual boot: I record and playback TV shows using Mythbuntu, which is Ubuntu running MythTV less options like OpenOffice (which could be added). Some of the computers had Windows on them and at the time was easier to use Windows. Not sure if its the distance or the TVs (multiple) but always seems the TV makes a lousy monitor for text.

I have never (but meant to) plugged my computer into a TV. As it happens my computer is close to a 48" TV that I can plug into with HDMI. I'm going to try that soon and see how unreal tournament and/or quake look.

If you don't hear from me for a while.. :)

Right: here started with the Mythbuntu computers connections mostly
being the 'Aux Video Input', which wasn't bad as the (horizontal)
resolution of TV programming at the time as 330, and IIRC the 'best' resolution at the time was 400. Now using HDMI inputs which allow the
    1080 resolution -- quite a change!

If you don't hear from me for a while.. :)

Either the computer failed or you're so totally engrossed in the games
    on the big screen!

The new Macs are intel based hardware and because of that, the backend is
    based
off of Unix. I don't have a lot of knowledge of Unix commands but the Mac stuff just... works for me.. though lately my new iMac is randomly rebooting but there doesn't seem to be any reason why and I can't seem to track it down... I have a funny feeling is Parallels desktop that is the cause as it always seems to show the parallels kernel extension that comes up.

I'm not sure anymore. The only windows box here belongs to my room mate. I don't know what she has going on there and I don't think she does either so

    Don't ask, don't tell. <g>

If I need to get or send her files I use a usb stick!

Speaking of USB sticks, and being very tired of wasting CDs and DVDs on distros that decide to not work, or LiveCDs that run so slowly they
might as well be hung... I found something called Easy2Boot which lets
you put ISOs for any OS you like all in a bunch on one USB drive and
pick the one to boot (it uses some GRUB variant and a complicated menu system). Hopefully it will work; if not, well, now all the distros I've collected will be in one place.

(I've started using 128GB flash drives for backup... and a couple of 'em
wound up permanently stuck to the back of a computer instead of
bothering to upgrade the HD, good for stuff that gets written once and
never moved again. Not so failure-prone as SSDs.)

Oh, and having finally (weeks later, it finally comes up!!) got the OpenMandriva liveCD to boot -- I hate Dolphin. Who thought dumbing down
the file manager Win7-style was a good idea?? Did they not notice all
    the screams of dismay??

KM> What am I doing worng??
I'm not sure. Is the network actually called workgroup? I recall chages between xp and win7/8 but have no way to look at it now.

Finally gave up on that. Right now just the XP and XP64 boxes are hooked
to the router/modem... XP can see and have its way with the XP64 HDs,
but XP64 can't get at XP. I don't understand; they are both set the
same, far as I can tell. Well, at least it goes the direction I want to
see stuff... I can copy files to XP64 and play videos from its big HD,
and it doesn't really have a huge need to see the XP box.

Not if I can help it but I have seen that too and do everything in my power not to see it again, since it's a dark hole that is nearly imposible to get out of without a reformat.

Reformatting is against my religion. <g>

linux makes me talk to myself:

    http://www.easy2boot.com/
    Lots of howto vids:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlP4eC6wDWE

So I tried Easy2Boot and works a treat. I was very tired of wasting CDs
and DVDs to burn linux images only to be disappointed in them time and
again, and now I can just dump them onto the USB stick, not waste disk
space or CDs/DVDs on 'em, and the bonus is they actually boot and run at something like usable speed, rather than slower'n dead (some are so slow
off a DVD it looks like the hardware has died).

Mint is halfway promising, at least I don't urgently wish to kill the developers after spending an hour or two with it. Tho the different
flavors (four of 'em! at least four...) sure are not the same when it
comes to this networking thing. One instantly saw Bullet (XP64) and all
is instantly good; another one can tell Bullet is there but mostly times
out (tho once it connects it's fine). Not sure if it's the desktop or
the file manager that's being different.

Linux, so many standards to choose from...
