• Vista Internet Problems

From MIKE POWELL@454:3/105 to ALL on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 17:15:00
A friend of mine has a laptop that runs Vista.

Recently, they have become unable to get web pages to load on their
machine. They get a "connectivity error." I had them test a few other
things. They are not able to get pages via IE or Firefox, and are not able
    to telnet anywhere.

However, they can PING other "foreign" systems fine, and they are able to
get updates via Windows update and (I think) Jave update.

They've tried the previous restore point, and it didn't help.

    Any ideas??

    Mike

What make and model laptop? The reason I ask is there are a few HP
laptop models that have a design flaw. When the system gets hot, it
partially unseats the graphics chip, among other things. One of the
symptoms is a loss of wireless connectivity.

One model I know about that has this problem is the HP Pavilion TX1000.
It's a laptop/touch screen convertible. The display flips and lays
down, turning the laptop into a tablet PC.

One other thing to try (if you haven't already) is hooking the laptop up directly to the router via Ethernet, and see if the problem persists.
If it works, then the problem is with the wireless side of the network.
If it doesn't work, then you know the problem is somewhere else.

My apologies in advance if you've already tried that.

However, they can PING other "foreign" systems fine, and they are able to MP>get updates via Windows update and (I think) Jave update.

It would help if I read the rest of the message before replying. Oops!

Unfortunately this sounds similar to the problem Dad is having with his upstairs computer and I'm tryign to diagnose it from 1,000 miles away.

Anyway, first though was is the problem due to a Firewall? My system
has several, not because I'm paranoid, just because some utilities I
    have act as Firewalls.

First one is the hardware one in the DSL Modem. This one was the one
causing my problem with not being able to get to time sync sites (nist1-chi.ustiming.org, time-b.nist.gov). The Port (UDP 123) was not
listed anywhere in the Firewall settings so I assumed....) I had the
DSL Modem's Firewall set to medium based on the suggested setting.

Have your friend turn off the various firewalls one at a time until is
able to reconnect to the world: DSL/Cable Modem,
    Windows/Avast!/Whatever Firewall utility.

Did s/he recently add BufferZone? Looked like it could be a nice safe
utility but caused several headaches here.

The old PCTools utility also has two files which, once installed, are
needed to allow Telnet and possibility some other communication methods
to continue to work, even though the utility was uninstalled.

    Mike....

    able
    to telnet anywhere.

Sorry to be so late, but it sounds like a corrupt TCP/IP registry key.
You might give this a try...

Use a manual method to reset TCP/IP

The reset command is available in the IP context of the NetShell
utility. Follow these steps to use the reset command to reset TCP/IP manually:

To open a command prompt, click Start and then click Run. Copy and
paste (or type) the following command in the Open box and then press ENTER:

    cmd

At the command prompt, copy and paste (or type) the following command
    and then press ENTER:

    netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

    Reboot the computer.

When you run the reset command, it rewrites two registry keys that are
used by TCP/IP. This has the same result as removing and reinstalling
    the protocol.
