As I type this on the Dell laptop, the Toshiba laptop is
currently running a Live CD version of Ubuntu. I managed to get

    Horray!

Apparently, however, the file system on the hard drive got
corrupted, as Linux won't boot from the hard drive. So, if the
pastor and his family want Linux back on this thing, I'll
probably have to wipe it and start from scratch.

Probably so, though with my limited experience with Mythbuntu (Mythbuntu
is the PVR-dedicated version of Ubuntu) here, it appears as if some of
the database file isn't wiped on a re-installation, which includes
formatting the drives. (I have two: the OS is on a small one and the recordings on a large one.) Not sure if changing the partition size
slightly would force a complete eformat, which seems like it would wipe
    all data.

It tried to boot, and drops to the Linux equivalent of a command
prompt (a terminal session, if I recall correctly), and gives an
error message about "failed to mount file system" or words to
    that effect.

Side thought, which may or may not be useful. <!> With my two hard
drives a couple of times GRUB complained it could not find the OS. I
had to tell BIOS to boot from the 'wrong' hard drive. Maybe I had a
second option misconfigured as now I don't have to tell it to boot from
the wrong drive. ...As you only have the one hard drive in the laptop
perhaps the equivalent to my two hard drives is if you have two
    partitions?

Well, I didn't have to. I went online at the Ubuntu Forums, and entered
the error message I was getting in the search box. One of the results I
got referred to what appeared to me to be the Linux version of chkdsk. I
ran the first command I saw, and got an error message. Turned out it
wasn't the right command for this particular installation. Saw another
one referenced in another message thread, ran that command, and it fixed
it. So, I didn't have to reload anything.

Everything is up and running, and already in the possession of the
pastor and his family. I brought it to church with me yesterday, and he
took it with them. He said last night it already came in handy, as one
of the pastor's sisters used it to finish some homework she had to do.

No. It turned out to be something that the Linux equivalent of Chkdsk
fixed. At least, the command I entered bore a resemblance to Chkdsk.

Well that's good! Especially when reloading and rerunning with the same BM>incorrect command would have given you the same error!

It was basically the same command, but with different switches
(apparently, I didn't have the ext4 file system loaded on the laptop in question, but either the ext3 or ext2. I don't remember which one.
But, the first command I saw referenced the ext4 file system. That's
    the one that didn't work.

already came in handy, as one of the pastor's sisters used it to
finish some homework she had to do.

So much for the electonic version of the dog ate my homework!

And that should have been "one of the pastor's wife's sisters".

My apologies for posting this in the wrong conference, but since it was discussed here... <G>

As I type this on the Dell laptop, the Toshiba laptop is currently
running a Live CD version of Ubuntu. I managed to get the correct parts together, and Ubuntu just played a sample audio recording of Aesop's
    Fables!

Apparently, however, the file system on the hard drive got corrupted,
as Linux won't boot from the hard drive. So, if the pastor and his
family want Linux back on this thing, I'll probably have to wipe it and

It tried to boot, and drops to the Linux equivalent of a command prompt
(a terminal session, if I recall correctly), and gives an error message
about "failed to mount file system" or words to that effect.

But, the main thing is: It's up and running! I'm quite shocked. I had
my doubts earlier this week that I'd be able to get the parts back
together, and all those tiny, hard to see with these 50 year old
astigmatic eyes ribbon cables and connectors hooked up correctly.

But, the main thing is it's up and running. Now, maybe I won't be out
the money that was spent on this "project". Whew! <G>
